Pre-Registration Checklist
Have ready: desired name, alternative spellings, a valid email you control (not tied to the domain you’re buying), payment card, and identity details that match your government ID—some registrars verify Whois accuracy.
Step 1 – Search & Lock Price
Go to Namecheap, Porkbun or Dynadot and search. Add the available name to cart immediately; this places a temporary 20-minute reservation so it can’t be sniped while you dither. Disable every up-sell except free Whois privacy.
Step 2 – Create Account & Enable 2FA
Use a strong unique password and TOTP-based two-factor authentication (Google Authenticator, Authy). Write back-up codes in a password manager; losing access to 2FA can lock you out of your domain forever.
Step 3 – Enter Registrant Data Correctly
ICANN requires accurate contact info. Typos can trigger verification suspension, so copy-paste from your ID. Opt into Whois privacy to hide your address from public lookups; it’s free at most registrars now.
Step 4 – Choose Registration Period
Register for the longest period you can afford—search engines see multi-year registrations as a minor trust signal. Set auto-renew to ON and add a secondary card to avoid failed renewals due to expired credit cards.
Step 5 – Review & Checkout
Double-check the spelling—typos are non-refundable. Apply any coupon codes; registrars like Porkbun almost always have first-year discounts. Pay with card or PayPal; crypto is rarely worth the volatility risk.
Step 6 – Initial DNS Setup
Once the order completes, log in and set nameservers. If you already have hosting, enter the host’s nameservers (e.g., ns1.siteground.com). If not, use the registrar’s free DNS and create placeholder A and MX records so email doesn’t bounce later.
Step 7 – Lock & Secure
Enable Registrar Lock (clientTransferProhibited) to block outbound transfers. Add Domain Guard or similar anti-spam feature to stop unsolicited transfer emails. Export an EPP code and store it in your password manager—never share it publicly.
Step 8 – Verify ICANN Email
Within 24 hours you’ll receive a “Whois Data Reminder” or “Verification” email. Click the link or the domain will be suspended. Whitelist noreply@registrar.com to avoid it landing in spam.
